Phil Manzanera
Probably best known as the lead guitarist for Roxy Music, Phil Manzanera however has recorded music for a number of bands as well as having an extensive solo career. Before joining Roxy Music in 1972 as a replacement for David O’List, Manzanera had been a member of prog band Quiet Sun which also included This Heat member Charles Hayward. Although recorded before his involvement with Roxy Music the record Mainstream was not released until 1975, the track I’ve included is the relaxing dreamy instrumental number ‘R.F.D.’. During the mid 70’s Roxy Music briefly disbanded, as a result Manzanera along with the other members of Roxy (except Bryan Ferry) formed the temporary band 801 primarily to perform 3 live concerts. They also recorded a record titled ‘Listen Now’ in 1977 and I’ve chosen the title track for my next choice. Throughout his time with Roxy Music Manzanera also recorded a number of solo records, the highlight for me being the 1978 record K-Scope which included my favourite Manzanera track ‘Gone Flying’, with Manzanera in full control of this spacey soulful number. Lastly I had to include a Roxy track as they are one of the coolest bands of all time and seeing as I’m putting these tracks in chronological order I’d thought I’d pick a track from the last Roxy Music record; Avalon. A beautiful chilled out record (probably largely due to it being recorded at the Compass Point Studio) I’ve picked the delightful track ‘India’.
