For the last Radio Jiro of the year we’ve got the harp master Andreas Vollenweider, who, along with Harpo Marx and angels are the only people I can actually think of who play the harp. Andreas Vollenweider is a New Age musician who most notably released a number of beautiful records throughout the 80s, I don’t really know too much about him other than he looks a lot like Leo Sayer but his music is far better. The great thing about Vollenweider records like most new age records is that you can usually find them for peanuts in charity shops and the first record of his I bought also happened to be his first record Behind The Gardens - Behind The Wall - Under The Tree and I’ve gone for the title track, a stunning piece of music, here is some great live footage of Vollenweider at a jazz festival in Germany, I love the guy in the front of the crowd at 30 seconds who is totally in the Vollenweider zone.
Next up ‘Belladonna’ from his second LP Caverna Magica, the track starts off as a typical Vollenweider piece but then suddenly goes up a gear or two and really gets your bum wiggling. Finally 2 Vollenweider pieces which both have really nice videos. I’m not too sure what it is exactly but they totally have that late night late 80s/early 90s VH-1 vibe about them, they were probably very uncool at the time but the aesthetic for both videos are spot on.
